Digital logic transitions power an internal infrared LED. This emitted light crosses a physically isolated air gap or glass barrier inside the chip, completely preventing raw current from crossing between the input and output networks.
Used in programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensor interfaces, and robotic systems where high-speed, noise-free logic isolation is crucial. a1458 optocoupler datasheet
The A1458 (HCPL-A1458) is a specialized high-speed optocoupler designed to provide galvanic isolation for IGBT and Power MOSFET gate driving in industrial motor drives and power supplies. Featuring an open-collector output, it offers 35 ns propagation delay and a robust operating range of -40°C to +100°C for high-noise environments. Technical specifications can be reviewed in the datasheet from Farnell . HCPL-A1458 | In Stock - utsource
Protecting communication lines (e.g., CAN, RS-485) in factory automation. | Pin Number | Name | Function |
Offers flexible voltage compatibility across 3.3V and 5V microcontroller logic domains. 50 kV/µs (Minimum)
Inside the package, pin 1 connects to the LED’s anode, pin 2 to its cathode. The phototransistor sits with its collector on pin 4 and emitter on pin 3. There is no base pin exposed; base current is generated solely by illumination. HCPL-A1458 | In Stock - utsource Protecting communication
For a practical test, one reliable source describes a functional verification method: "First, apply a positive voltage of about 20V to pins 5 and 8. Then, using a multimeter on the R*1 range, apply current to pins 2 and 3. At this point, pin 6 (VO) will output a voltage of about 3.8V. Without the current, there is no output voltage". This simple test can confirm whether the optocoupler's internal LED and photodetector are functioning correctly.
